There aren’t many cellists, or indeed many classical musicians, who come anywhere near being a household name in the UK, but Sheku Kanneh-Mason is one of them. He won BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016, played at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, and in 2020 became the first cellist ever to reach the Top Ten of the UK official album chart. During lockdown he and his siblings shared their love of music-making with a huge online audience from their home in Nottingham. He was awarded an MBE in 2020. Sheku first performed with the Philharmonia in 2018. In summer 2020 he was the soloist in the first of our Philharmonia Sessions, filmed at Battersea Arts Centre and streamed worldwide. It was an emotional occasion – the first time the Philharmonia musicians had played together after an unprecedented four months’ silence.
Sheku performs in all our UK residency venues in the 2022/23 season.
