Haydn Cello Concerto No. 2 Listen

Ravel Daphnis and Chloé Suite No. 2 Listen

Superstar cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason plays the first of his concerts as the Philharmonia’s Featured Artist for the 2022/23 season.

Sheku’s unparalleled rise to fame has included winning BBC Young Musician of the Year, playing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and becoming the first cellist ever to have an album in the UK Top Ten. He joins the Philharmonia in not just one but both of Haydn’s surviving cello concertos – delightful works full of joyful energy.

Framing the concertos are two dazzlingly orchestrated pieces of musical storytelling. Richard Strauss portrays the flamboyant, insatiable Don Juan in music brimming with drama. The rich, imaginative orchestral textures of Ravel’s masterpiece Daphnis and Chloé, composed for the Ballets Russes, transport the listener to a magical world of shepherdesses, goatherds, gods – and pirates.
