Salonen Conducting Fellows
Our partnership with Colburn School nurtures a select group of young conductors through the Negaunee Conducting Program.
The Salonen Conducting Fellows take part in a programme led by the Philharmonia’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Esa-Pekka Salonen.
This new partnership project with the Colburn School in Los Angeles will nurture a small, select group of aspiring young conductors, recruited from around the world. During their course of study at Colburn, these Salonen Fellows will also connect with the Philharmonia.
The inaugural Salonen Fellows, starting in the 2019/20 Season, are Ross Jamie Collins (pictured) and Angus Webster.

About the project
Up to three Salonen Fellows – graduates recruited from around the world – will earn an Artist Diploma in Conducting at Colburn, developing and honing their craft under Esa-Pekka Salonen’s personal mentorship. Together, the Colburn School and Philharmonia Orchestra will provide significant real-world experiences. The course will include:
- serving as preparatory conductors for the Colburn Orchestra, and conducting the Zipper Outreach Orchestra, Colburn’s performing ensemble for community engagement activities;
- conducting the Philharmonia in its residency series and on tour
- working as assistant conductors to Esa-Pekka Salonen on Philharmonia projects
- connecting more widely to the Orchestra’s Emerging artists programme and outreach projects
The opportunity to identify and work with outstanding young conductors in this visionary global programme with the Colburn School is a wonderful manifestation of the Philharmonia’s mission and vision.
