Schoenberg: Gurrelieder CD cover

The ‘tales of Gurre’ tells the story of two lovers, King Waldemar and Tove. Waldemar’s wife, Queen Helwig, finds out about their love and has Tove killed; Waldemar rails against God and as punishment is forced to spend every night riding with the ghosts of his dead vassals.

Eventually spring returns and the souls of Waldemar and Tove are united. This astonishing performance of Schoenberg’s masterpiece is conducted by Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen.
